The London Hospital
Certificate of Completion of Nurse Training
1923 - 1927 |
|
The Signatures on this original London
Hospital 'Certificate of Training', awarded to Ms Edith Kathleen
Hunt, are collectors items in themselves. They are original,
written in ink individually. Those involved are well known names
in the History of Nursing and medicine. 'Knutsford'
Sidney George Holland, the second Viscount Knutsford a well
known physcian, Chairman of the London Hospital House Committee
for 34 years with a strong reputation for supporting the sick.
He died in 1931.
Beatrice Monk was matron of the London Hospital from 1919 -
1931. She was President of the Royal College of Nursing from
1938 - 1940, was awarded the CBE and was a holer of the highest
Military award to nurses - the Royal Red Cross Medal (RRC). She
was said to be an amazing but unassuming person! She signed this
certificate May 16th 1927... She died in June 1962. |

Likewise, the three other
signatories on the certificate RA Rowlands MD (Physician);
Russell Howard (CBE., MS., FRCS., Surgeon); and Richard Warren
MD., FRCS., were all eminent in their own right in the field of
Medicine and had all played some part in the training of Edith
Kathleen Hunt at the London Hospital. All are worthy of historic
examination. Especially, from a nursing history point of view,
Edith Kathleen Hunt herself. What happened to her after
qualifying. Where did she go? (if anywhere); what did she do?
(professionally). Are there any photographs of her? What of her
family? Another individual nurse history perhaps?
If all the Universities in the UK alone were to encourage the
carrying out of such research by just one student - how many
grains of sand could we add to what is right now but only a
small, if very distinguished pile....
